Five years ago today, six Bannister children and two Bannister parents arrived in Australia. Five years ago today, we were tired (so very tired) and not even sure if we were going to be allowed to stay. Five years ago today, we heard our very first “G’day, welcome to Sydney” from a friendly airport custom’s officer.
And even though I may not have known it at the time, five years ago today marked the beginning of the best five years of my life.
So here’s to us, Bannister’s. Here’s to riding bikes to the shops, having hedges (or nothing at all) around our houses instead of electric fences, and politicians who sometimes sound more like children on the playground than adults in Parliament. Here’s to not taking yourself too seriously “yeah’s” instead of “ja’s” and backyard barbies. Here’s to Vegemite on toast in the morning and an ice cold VB as the sun goes down. And most importantly, here’s to a million more nights like this, where we light sparklers, eat Coles-bought chocolate cake and take a few minutes to remember that this place truly is the best in the world.
